The function of plasticizer is to increase the softness of film. For some coating base materials which are brittle in themselves, plasticizers are essential to obtain films with good softness and other mechanical properties. Plasticizers are usually organic compounds with low molecular weight and low volatility, but some polymer resins can also be used as plasticizers (also known as plasticizing resins), such as alkyd resins, which are commonly used as plasticizing resins for chlorinated rubber and nitrocellulose coatings. Both plasticizer and plasticized resin must have good miscibility with the plasticized resin.
The plasticizer shall have low toxicity. While increasing the flexibility of the film, the hardness of the film shall be reduced as little as possible, and the film shall not change color, especially when the film is used outdoors. The type and dosage of plasticizer vary according to the different base resin in the coating and the different application requirements of the coating.
The plasticizing effect of the plasticizer is achieved by reducing the glass transition temperature (TG) of the base resin. The glass transition temperature (TG) is the transition temperature of the resin from hard and brittle solid state (glass state) to rubber like elastomer state (high elastic state). Plasticizers can generally be divided into two categories. One is the main plasticizer (solvent plasticizer), the other is the auxiliary plasticizer (non solvent plasticizer). Some of their groups can interact with some groups in the resin, so the main plasticizer and resin can be miscible with each other.
